Premature Deaths

Since fiscal year 1999, more than 400 children have died within the year after their families had contact with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. In fiscal year 2003, 122 children died under those circumstances, nearly 50 percent more than in fiscal year 1999. And, while most of the deaths have been either due to natural causes or ruled accidents, the department’s inspector general has noted that many of the deaths could have been avoided.
